I found this cool bit of BASIC code linked from Apple2History.org written by a guy named Chris Baird. One look at it and I just had to try it out. Since I don’t have all the hardware/software in place yet that I need to get stuff off the internet and onto 5.25” floppies, I had to do it old school and type it in on the Apple II.

It took me a couple of hours to punch it in. Those lines are long! I kept making typos and I’d have to start the whole line all over again. I was running it after I punched in each line to make sure that it was coming out alright. A few times I got carried away and I punched in 3 or 4 lines. I made a few typos somewhere because it looked like crap when I ran it. I had to go back and check all those lines all over again and find the mistakes. So it took a little longer than it should have.

At first I couldn't find them. I was beginning to think the code was bogus and that there was a mistake in it. So I ran it in my Apple II emulator to make sure it wasn’t me.

The code looks like he’s got it on some weird Apache server in Australia. I think it’s on a school server so who knows how long it’ll be available. Here’s the code in case it disappears:

There’s a few images I’d like to try my hand at getting on the IIe and IIc just for kicks. He answered me back. It’s apparently a pretty complicated process involving some shell scripting to convert a raster bit-stream into DATA statements that can then be download to the Apple II via the serial port.

I’ll hold off on that for now until I can get my hands on a Super Serial Card. In the meantime, I’ll have to settle on converting images into MacPaint format.
